Spilled Drink on a Fabric Bag: Blot, Don’t Rub

Blot from the outside in, test first and keep heat away until the mark is gone.

Typical situation

Someone knocked a coffee against your fabric bag and it has soaked into the side panel. You want to know the first thing to do.

Main answer · berabags Editorial Team · Care view

Blot the liquid with a clean white cloth, working from the outside of the stain inwards, and do not rub. Extension services say that rubbing can spread the stain and damage fibres, and that you should treat stains straight away.

What the guides advise

  • Treat stains at once, while they are fresh.
  • Blot excess liquid onto a clean white cloth or paper towel. Do not rub.
  • Check the care label if there is one, and test any stain remover on a hidden area first.
  • Do not dry the item with heat until the stain has gone, because heat can set it.

Steps for a fabric bag

  1. Empty the bag and stand it so the stain is accessible.
  2. Press clean white cloth or paper towel onto the spill to soak up as much as you can, changing it as it wets.
  3. Dab a little cool water onto the area and blot again to dilute it.
  4. If the bag is washable and the stain remains, treat it with a stain remover after testing, and wash as the fabric allows.
  5. Let the bag air-dry, away from direct heat, and check the stain before it goes back into use.

Where this answer stops

These steps suit plain washable fabric. Silk, leather, suede, coated and glued bags can mark or warp with water. Each stain type, such as red wine or tea, may need a different treatment, and this is general advice, not a guarantee.

Take everything out of the bag so liquid does not spread to the lining or the contents, and stand the bag so the wet side faces up, not down. Gravity can pull a spill through the layers.

Water-repellent finishes can give you a few minutes before a spill soaks in. A bag with a wipe-clean surface is much easier to deal with than a fine open weave that drinks liquid at once.

Keep a small packet of tissues or a clean cloth in your bag. The first minute decides how hard the stain is to remove, and a dry cloth in the right place is worth more than any product later.
