Remove the stop, take off the old slider, fit a matching new one and fit a new stop. Match the size and the type of teeth first.
Your tote’s zipper teeth are fine, but the slider no longer closes them, and you want to try replacing the slider yourself.
Remove the top stop, take off the old slider, fit a new slider of the same size and type, and put on a new stop. Zipper Rescue rates this as a very easy repair for a zipper with a closed bottom, taking two to five minutes with pliers and wire cutters.
What Zipper Rescue says
- For a zipper with a worn-out slider and intact teeth, replacing the slider is the repair.
- For a separating zipper, the steps are: remove the top stop with pliers or wire cutters, remove the old slider, match the size with the sizing guide, install the new slider and pinch on a new top stop.
- For a zipper that does not separate, it describes cutting open the bottom, replacing the slider, and installing a bottom stop with pliers.
- Tools needed are pliers and wire cutters, and needle-nose pliers are usually best.
How to match the size
Zipper Shipper explains that the size, or gauge, of a zipper is the width of its teeth in millimetres when it is closed. It says that the markings on the back of a slider are not a reliable guide, and that measuring the teeth is more reliable. If the zipper will not close, measure one side and double it.
What to do
- Measure the teeth, and note whether they are coil, plastic or metal.
- Buy a slider that matches both.
- Remove the stop, slide off the old slider and fit the new one.
- Fit a stop so the new slider cannot come off.
- Test the zipper several times before you rely on it.
Where this answer stops
This is a general outline from a repair supplier. A bag with a lined or glued zipper can be harder, and a repair shop can do it for you.

Three more perspectives
Take a photograph of the zipper before you start, including both ends. It shows you where the stops sit, and it helps if you need to restore the original arrangement.
Match the type of teeth as well as the size. A slider for coil teeth is not the same part as one for metal teeth, and a wrong match will not close the zipper.
Work slowly and keep the pliers away from the fabric. A slip of the tool can mark a bag, and it is easier to take the extra minute than to repair the fabric.
