Claim as soon as the damage is found or the waiting period has passed, and within 60 days of mailing.

Typical situation

A bag you posted, or one you bought, was shipped by USPS and arrived crushed or never arrived. You want to know how to make an insurance claim.

Photograph everything, keep the packaging and the receipt, and file the claim as soon as you can, within 60 days of the mailing date. USPS says that claims for insured mail can be filed for damage immediately, and for lost parcels after a waiting period.

What USPS says

  • For insured mail with damage or missing contents, a claim can be filed right away and no later than 60 days from the mailing date.
  • For a lost parcel, a claim for Priority Mail Express can be filed after 7 days, and for most other insured services after 15 days.
  • USPS says you need the original mailing receipt and proof of the item’s value.
  • A missing-mail search request is a separate step. It can be made from 7 days after mailing.

What to gather

  1. The mailing receipt and tracking number.
  2. Proof of value: a receipt, an invoice or a listing.
  3. Photos of the damaged item, the box and the label.
  4. The packaging, kept until the claim is settled.

Who can claim

The sender normally claims, although the addressee can file in some cases. If you bought the bag, ask the seller to file or to give you what you need to do so, and check who the seller says is responsible for the shipment.

If you are the sender, add insurance for a bag of real value, and keep the mailing receipt and proof of value. A claim without those documents is harder to win, and many people throw them away.

Pack the bag so it keeps its shape and cannot move in the box: stuff the inside with paper, wrap straps and hardware, and use a sturdy outer box. A well-packed bag is less likely to need a claim at all.

Photograph the box, the label and the damage before you open or discard anything. Keep the packaging for inspection. If the carrier asks to see it and you have thrown it out, your claim can fail.
